Active listening is a communication skill extensively used in Qualitative Research. Active listening involves going beyond simply hearing the words as spoken by another person. An active listener seeks to understand the meaning and intent behind the spoken words.

To be an active listener, practice these techniques:

• Be fully present in the conversation.
• Show interest using non-verbal cues such as keeping eye contact and nodding with your head.
• Ask questions to encourage elaborated responses, avoid questions which can be answered by a simple yes or no.
• Withhold your judgment and advice.
